Are steam eye masks useful for patients with dry eyes?

Inside our upper and lower eyelids, there a special gland called the meibomian gland. The meibomian gland can secrete oil, and the oil it secretes is an component of the tear film in our eyes. The oil secreted by the gland is discharged and spread over the surface of the eye when we blink, but longterm eye fatigue, reduced blinking, and infestations such as mites or incomplete makeup removal can cause the meibomian glands to become blocked, and oil secretion is not smooth, which can lead to excessive evaporation of tears on the surface of the eye, causing dry eyes. The meibomian glands patients with dry eyes are in a pathological state for a long time, and the oil is solid at room temperature and is not easy to discharge.

The of steam eye masks is relatively simple, basically a “modern advancement” of the traditional hot towel compress, mainly playing a role in hot compress, which belongs to physical and is a means of auxiliary treatment. To some extent, steam eye masks can play a role in treating dry eyes, that is, the increase in the temperature the eye tissue can promote the softening and discharge of the meibomian gland oil, but if the temperature of the steam eye mask is too high, if it is worn for too long, it is easy to cause low-temperature burns and subsequent eye damage, resulting in symptoms such as dry eyes and foreign body sensation.

If used incorrectly, it can actually cause problems.

Although steam eye masks are convenient to use, many people experience allergic reactions, conjunctivitis, corneal inflammation due to improper operation during use or not cleaning the skin around the eyes. Be very careful! Steam eye masks should not be used while wearing contact, nor should they be used with makeup on! Under a microscope, those who wear makeup, the roots of their eyelashes are very dirty. A lot of makeup black pigment, and mascara are all deposited there. These deposits are all contributing factors to bacterial and mite infections of the eyelid margin. Many steam eye instructions do not include such warnings! Many beauty-conscious young ladies do not remove their makeup before using them during lunch break. Therefore, steam eye masks are not suitable everyone and in all situations.
