Health Preservation Guide during Dog Days

In China, the culture of health preservation has a long history, integrating the wisdom and experience of the ancients. Health preservation during dog days is highly regarded. It is not merely an adaptation to the seasonal variations but also a meticulous care for one’s health.

Dog days are divided into the early dog days, the mid dog days, and the late dog days. This year, the early dog days commence from July 15th and conclude on July 24th; the mid dog days begin on July 25th and end on August 13th; the late dog days start on August 14th and finish on August 23rd.

Firstly, there are five things that should be strictly avoided during dog days. Steer clear of cold showers when you’re sweating. Avoid sleeping bare at night. Keep your stomach off cold beverages. Sip  your water, don’t gulp  it. And don’t let your skin get scorched by  the sun.

In terms of diet, some fruits are not suitable for excessive consumption during dog days, such as dragon fruits, lychees, watermelons, mangoes, and so on. While some meats are enjoyable, such as lamb, chicken, and duck. It’s also beneficial to include ‘three melons and three leaves’ in your diet during the hottest days of summer. Bitter melon is known for its heat-dispelling properties, loofah gourd helps to clear the body’s channels, and winter melon aids in  reducing swelling. Mint leaves provide a refreshing coolness to combat the summer heat, perilla leaves help to eliminate dampness and balance the stomach, and lotus leaves are effective in  clearing heat and promoting the removal of excess fluids.

Regarding exercise, moderate sweating exercises are more suitable in summer, such as swimming, jogging, yoga, Baduanjin, Tai Chi, etc. Simultaneously, certain parts of the body require extra care: the neck is sensitive to drafts, the hair should stay dry, and the stomach is most afraid of the cold.

Moderate sunbathing on the back is beneficial, especially before 9 a.m. or after 3 p.m., as it helps to replenish (补充) the body’s Yang energy and boost immunity. Soaking your feet in warm water at around 40 degrees Celsius for about 15 minutes every evening around 9 p.m. can promote blood circulation, relieve fatigue, and improve sleep quality.

The Chinese attach great significance to health preservation during dog days because they are well aware of the importance of conforming to nature and balancing the body and mind. By adhering to these health preservation guidelines, we can maintain a good condition during dog days, inherit the ancient wisdom of health preservation, and embrace a healthy life.
